Canadian hardcore band Fucked Up will be the first to get us into Christmas atmosphere as we heard they prepare, in cooperation with selected guests, to adapt "Do They Know It's Christmas?", for charity, of course.
The singer of the group Damian Abraham in an interview with online blog Vulture of New York magazine stated that they intend to use the money from the Polaris Music Prize they earned recently - the Polaris Music Prize is the Canadian equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize in Britain - to record the song with the participation of TV on the Radio, Broken Social Scene, GZA, Bob Mould, No Age, Yo La Tengo , the comic David Cross and members of Vampire Weekend, while they await the response of the Feist, Jarvis Cocker and MIA.
As to where the income from the song will end up Abraham replied: "We’re doing it for a few different organizations, like Justice for the
Missing, that are affiliated with the 500 missing and murdered
aboriginal women in Canada. That number is an old official statistic
that the government uses, but the number is probably closer to 3,000... This is an undocumented, underreported crime
that’s been going on for years..."
As for why they chose this song he said: "So I liked the idea of somewhat marginalized indie rockers coming together for a marginalized cause. There’s a kind of cavalier colonialism to the original, like the West has to go in and help this poor Third World country. But the charities that we’re trying to help are exactly a product of this colonial history... So there’s an irony to using the song".
This is not the first time Fucked Up recorded a Christmas song for charity along with other artists . In 2007 they released "David Christmas" the second part includes the adaptation of "Stars on 45" with collaboration from Nelly Furtado, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Jay Reatard, Faint and members of Black Lips.
