A legend of music & journalism, the first man who got an interview with Nirvana, the first who wrote about Madchester (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays), John Robb, besides the Independent, the Guardian, the Sunday Times, etc. will be writing for Mix Grill starting September 1st.
Every Wednesday from September 1st, John Robb will honor us by writing articles, exclusively for Mix Grill. As you have noticed, Mix Grill contains other than Greek an English Edition, which has its own audience from around the world.
The articles by John Robb will be translated into Greek and published on the cover of both versions every Wednesday morning. In addition, your comments will be translated and available in both versions, so that John Robb himself will be able to intervene wherever he feels like it.
But who is John Robb for those who do not know him?
- First of all, in 1977 John Robb and Mark Tilton formed "The Membranes", a post-punk band, which was active until 1990.
- He is the lead singer of the punk-rock band Goldblade , a band formed in mid '90s.
- The Goldblade have released 5 albums between 1997 and 2008 with "Rebel Songs" of 2005 being for many their best record or perhaps the album that launched the band to high skies. "Mutiny" 2008 has certainly sold more copies than ever with the single "Riot! Riot !" (released on a limited edition 7-Intze) being one of the greatest hits of the band. Listen to it below:
- In the 80s he began to write for UK's music paper "Sounds", which he made widely known in the late 80s when he was the first to interview Nirvana as well as write about the Manchester scene (Madchester). Also, he was the first to mention in 1989 the term "Britpop" for the relevant music bands. And we still use this expression for various British bands ...
- He introduced to the public various bands such as "Therapy?" and "Cornershop", whom he used to manage.
- John Robb has written many books about music, like what is maybe the best biography of Stone Roses: "Stone Roses And The Resurrection Of British Pop" in 1996, the best seller "Punk Rock: An Oral History" (2006), the recent "Death to Trad Rock" in 2009 and the awesome tribute to Manchester and its scene "The North Will Rise Again-Manchester Music City from 1976 to 1996" etc.
- Since 2008, he's a professor of popular culture for the University of Salford and generally participates in Conferences on music and media.
- He is a huge fan of Blackpool FC.
- He has appeared many times on British TV, like the shows "I Love the 60s/70s/80s/90s" and "7 Ages Of Rock" in BBC and the show "Top 100" of Channel 4. He was standing partner for "The Pop Years" on Sky, which presented the history of punk rock in 10 episodes. In 2009 he hosted his own show entitled Zeitgeist, produced by students and professors at the University of Salford, in Manchester. Finally, he is a frequent commentator on several radio shows of BBC.
- In the 80s, he wrote for Sounds and Melody Maker and is currently working with leading newspapers and magazines, such as Independent, Observer, Sunday Times, Guardian, the "street" newspaper The Big Issue (created for the homeless in Britain and now sells 300,000 a week, and comes out in eight different countries) and various web sites.
One of these web sites will be Mix Grill starting September 1st. For the first time (I don't like that expression, but it's true...), a Legend of music and journalism in Britain and worldwide will write for a Greek music site, which is of course a great honor for us!
