June Carter born 1929 was an early singer and actress, and with the family band The Carter Family met Johnny Cash in the mid 50s. Her friend Elvis Presley repeatedly encouraged her to hear the songs of Johnny Cash and a joint tour of Presley and Carter Family, he played a song only to convince her.
When they met at the backstage of Grand Ole Opry, Cash shouted that one day he would marry her, but her being already married to Carl Smith, smiled politely. Soon the artistic streets and joined as the entire family of Carter admired Cash and from the early '60s began joint tours.
The Ring of Fire written in 1963 by June Carter and Merle Kilgore was originally intended for June's sister, Anita . When Johny heard it he soon found his own way to interpret it. It gave room for six months to Anita to make a success out of it and if there wasn't any, he would then publish his own performance. This drove Johnny Cash and the album "Ring of Fire: The best of Johhny Cash" at the top of the charts. The lyrics describe the unstable emotional situation between the couple that was soon to be tested by the dependence of Cash in drugs. As he admitted later, had it not been for June Carter's moving in and her family's at home, he would never had escaped from the nightmare of use of drugs. The whole family respected the artist and the man who passed some difficult times and stood beside him until he came back on track. Only then, in 1968, namely, June Carter agreed to marry him. It was then that they won Grammy for their own version of the song Jackson of Jerry Leiber and Billy Edd Wheeler.
The successes for the pair continued until the middle of the 80s and they have shared many television appearances as in guest "Dr. Quinn: only the Wild West". They died by just a few months time remaining in the history of music as one of the most legendary couples.
