We have
often seen songs that were not that popular at their original release,
to become famous, usually several years after their recording, due to a
commercial spot. Listening to even the smallest part of the track during the spot you repeatedly watch on the TV, it sticks to your mind and, if not a connoisseur, you search for the title and the performer. At several circumstances, numerous songs even climbed to No 1 of the official charts, for example remember the case of Muddy Waters with Manish boy and the spot for Levi’s 501.
In ONE TAPE, we recorded some of the songs we were really pleased to hear on the spots for several products recently, as well as back when only public songs existed. I remember back then my entire family taking places in front of the black and white Telefunken receiver to watch those old TV game shows.
One of the first spots I remember was for Amstel with the music from Enigma (Give a bit of Mmh to me) and Amanda Lear at her culmination. At about the same time, the music of Gonna fly now from the soundtrack of Rocky was heard with a female voice singing PATISTAS - back then that was the dominant cosmetics store instead of Hondos. A few years late, I can remember Total eclipse by Klaus Nomi on the Campari spot and Be bop-a-lula on Balloo candies. Especially on liquer spots, wonderful songs have been heard such as Litanie des saints by Dr John, Don’t let the stars get in your eyes by Perry Como for Metaxa, Atomic Soda by Babybird for Grant’s etc.
A pleasant outcome - although some disagree - of the spot music is that they became the vehicle for some songs by Greek bands and artists to become popular. One of them was Fake by Raining Pleasure for Cosmote in 2002, who already had a long career by then. They were followed by Mikro for the same songs and the examples just keep going.
Another category contains songs I never expected to hear on a spot and the representatives in ONE TAPE are Stale mate by Motorpsycho for the after shave Str8, Isla de encanta by Pixies for Visa Europe 2010, Ceremony by New Order and lately Let's go surfing by the Drums.
