One of the bands that defined the music of the past decade, a very talented duo with a good drummer (Meg) and a hyperactive and musically brilliant singer and guitarist (Jack) and one of the wants of the Greek public after that concert at the stadium of Beach Volley that never ended no longer exists!
With the announcement that was published a few hours ago, White Stripes informed us that they will not release another album and will not do a concert together again. According to the statement below, the reason is not the usual meaning the differences between Jack and Meg White, but their belief that they should stop now that the band still is in on top...
It's a shame really ... The band released the following 6 albums, which are all of them, very good. Along with the Strokes at the beginning of the Zeros they restored garage-rock to the surface and influenced (and continue to affect) many great bands. I think the White Stripes could write more albums. They were not tired... Besides, Jack White in the last few years has been dealing with many projects (The Raconteurs, Dead Weather, etc.) and it is evident that as a composer is in a good period!
The couple was married for a few years and then divorced, but without dissolving the band. We should also note that the White Stripes stopped live performances in 2007, because as Jack said, Meg had great anxiety and various psychological problems. Last May, Jack said that Meg had overcome the problems and hope started to build that they would be replaying on stage.
The last time they played live was on February 20, 2009 in the television show of Conan O 'Brien "Late Night" and had played "We are going to be friends"( listen here ). As you can read in the following announcement, the record company has plenty of unreleased material from live and studio recordings and there will gradually be relevant releases.
I don't know the real reasons for the dissolution of the band and perhaps we'll never know. Perhaps the problems of Meg. But surely we are dealing with the most serious band dissolution of the last ten years.
White Stripes - Discography

* De Stijl (2000)
* White Blood Cells (2001)
* Elephant (2003)
* Get Behind Me Satan (2005)

The announcement of the dissolution of the assembly
The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.
The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.
It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.
Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes' intense and incredible career.
Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular channels.
Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn't met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who've shared in those
creations, with their feelings considered greatly.
With that in mind the band have this to say:
" The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your
involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful. "
Sincerely,
Meg and Jack White
