Since the beginning of 2009, Music is my radar, as well as the friendly column That's entertainment, have published their favorites for all previous years of the zeros. We have already begun re-listening and preparing, so to be ready in November to present our lists of the best albums, singles, films and concerts we mostly enjoyed over the decade coming to an end. But first we will remember the most important releases of 2008.
In 2008, the Portishead returned after 11 years with Third, which was the album of the year for many, and marked a worthy successor of the previous two albums by the band from Bristol. The return of the mostly famous Gallacher brothers from Manchester, Dig out your soul was surprisingly good. The Foals of our compatriot John Filipaki with their dance-punk sound were particularly loved by the British music press, leaving promises for the next decade. Nick Cave , like old wine, gets better with each album...
Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane of Rascals recorded the The age of understatement, as the Last Shadow Puppets, far from the sound we were used to from the Arctic Monkeys, with fascinating results. The Raconteurs released in 2008 their second album, Consolers of the lonely and REM released Accelerate, their best zeros record, and gave a terrific concert at Kallimarmaron Stadium in October. The Kings of Leon released their fourth album, which was the most successful, commercially. The New Yorkers TV on the Radio gave us Dear science, the sound of which is the 'easiest' in their entire discography.
The MGMT released their debut Oracular spectacular shuffling new psychedeleia with pop, progressive, dance, glam and electro sounds. The Vampire Weekend introduced us to their very special sound and Paul Weller released 22 dreams, one of the best album in his personal career. 2008 was also one of the best years of the decade for Greek artists: the Raining Pleasure released their excellent sixth studio album Who's gonna tell Juliet, Monica Christodoulou recorded the best debut greek production over the recent years with an independent company and became very promising for greek music in general. Finally, Monsieur Minimal from Thessaloniki recorded Lollipop, loved much by us, pure popers. Blind, Love is noise, Human, Sex on Fire, Handsfree, Violet hill, Sweet about me, Mercy, My heart, 4 minutes are played everywhere.
