The bad news continue in 2011. Last year, a few weeks before his concert in Athens, we learned that he could not come. Unfortunately, we will never see him again on stage. The 62-year old musician and poet Gil Scott-Heron died yesterday afternoon in New York. He was sick after a trip to Europe.
Heron fought with drug dependence for several years. Indeed, in 2001 he was arrested for possession of cocaine. Furthermore, it was rumored that he was positive for AIDS.
Beyond that, however, Gil Scott -Heron was a great musician. "The Godfather of Rap", as many called him, even though he did not like it... He characterized his music as "bluesology", ie a mixture of poetry, soul, blues, jazz. Indeed, in many songs, the lyrics had many political elements.
From 1970 to '82, Heron released 13 albums, 3 books, 1 live album and 2 collections. From 1982 until today, Gilbert-Scott Heron had released 2 albums and a number of collections, live albums. Indeed, last year's album "I'm new here" got great reviews...
