Anyone who went to
the live knowing and waiting to hear only Tonight
the Streets are ours, was disappointed. Everyone else had a
melodic journey of a night.
Although organizers, sponsors or whoever else was responsible for planning the evening, had some strange ideas. To be more specific, the counter sold tickets for standing and seated. The majority of viewers prefer to be standing with a drink, to be able to move or dance, generally the relaxed feel of a concert. Hence, therefore, most tickets sold for standing. A few steps later you found that standing meant on the balcony as the arena was filled with chairs. In the middle of the concert the vacancies were few and as time passed became more, even in the front seat. Were they all fans of Richard Hawley, or should they be there for appearance sake? The artist knew the layout of the site?
To ensure, however, that the nagging wasn't yesterday's live feel, it must be said that Hawley played about an hour and a half, and every song was a different trip to the tunes we have been accustomed. The commanding and disciplined voice filled the room and each of the listeners with calm. Tracks such as Hotel Room, Open up Your Door, For Your Lover Give Some Time and the amazing The Ocean saved for the encore, was of the best moments of the live.
The man himself, minimal in his communication with the public, the guitar made all the magic for him, kind and confident, he made reference to the last time he had appeared in Greece in 1998 and (of course) said he loves the Greek public.
Leaving, I left my objections behind and held on to a Saturday night with lovely scratches on a guitar and a Richard Hawley who reminded me a little of Elvis, a little of Cash, a little of Elvis Costello but also unique that I was really glad that I saw, and even more heard, live.
