LCD Soundsystem after having released three critically acclaimed albums and won three Grammy Awards, posted a statement to the band's website, announcing their retirement following a farewell concert, on April 2, 2011. And so they did. A three and a half – hour show at Madison Square Garden (NY) with Arcade Fire, Shit Robot and Reggie Watts as guests, brought the curtain down on their decade together.
"If it’s a funeral, let’s have the best funeral ever!!" reads the post and they suggest their fans wore black, white or black and white outfits at the concert.
Arcade Fire's Win Butler, Regine Chassagne, Jeremy Gara and Will Butler joined the band to sing backing vocals on 'North American Scum', while there were also guest appearances from Shit Robot and Reggie Watts.
The 29-song set was split into five parts, including two encores, and included tracks such as 'Losing My Edge', 'Daft Punk Is Playing In My House', 'I Can Change' and a rare performance of '45:33'.
"This is a weird experience for us. In keeping with the history of our band, we hope it's going to be a weird experience for everybody," LCD Soundsystem founder James Murphy told the crowd.
The set closed with 'New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down' before the band ended the show with an extended bow.
