Dear ...,
Giannis Petridis, the only Greek who entered "Rock n Roll Hall of Fame", informed the fans of his legendary show "From 4 til 5" on the National Greek Radio 105,8 that the show comes to an end on June 30!!! Not to mention the fact that the show completed 35 years on air, just a few days ago!!
The Reason? As the Greek journalist Mr. Dimitris Kanellopoulos claims here, the plan of the MInistry of Internal Affairs (in cooperation with IMF), which concerns the administration of Greek Radio and TV includes the following:
All producers must pass exams organized by the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection (ASEP) in order to be re-hired by Greek Radio and TV. When will the shows stop? On the 1st of July. When will the shows start again? Nobody knows. When will ASEP exams take place? Nobody knows that either. And what will happen to Greek Radio and TV until then, without employees to carry out the work? This is the ultimate depreciation of Public Radio (and TV). Party time for private radios...
As you can understand, a legend in radio worldwide has to stop his show as an effect of economic crisis in Greece. You can read the whole story here.
John Robb commented the following:
Someone sang 'don't let the bastards grind you down' and these days the corporate takeover and the lawyers and the accountants think they know more about rock n' roll than we do. I'm shocked to hear the latest ridiculously stupid decision made by the 'suits'. Apparently Giannis Petridis, a top Greek DJ respected all over the world- to a lot he has been the Greek John Peel- is been laid off by ERT radio in Greece. I hope this is not true, this ridiculous notion.
Petridis was the link between Greek music and the rest of the world. He was the connection that brought many bands into contact with the Greek public and we respected him massively in the UK. I'm sure this can only be a temporary aboration. It cannot be long before a DJ of his talent and the mind respect he's got, will pop up somewhere else to make foals this radio station that made this dumb decision.
I'd like to dedicate this week's small round to him and to all the Djs working as him in a same kind position around the world. They are the network that all the great modern music is based upon. There can hardly be a group that's filling a stadium in any country in the world that doesn't owe its first break back to people like this and their tireless efforts to get them heard in the first place. It's not been groups that fill stadiums, it's all the little interest in groups that pop up everywhere, the circuit groups, the groups that people would talk about 25 years later, that were first played in this kind of shows.
Shows like this are a place where the minus slapping pop crack are left to put out there all the time or quick book pop records that no one ever buys or often buy them but don't listen to them ever again. You know there's million sellers you could swear you never ever going to hear again. You think do people buy these records and listen to them for the next 20 years? Do people even listen to them once? People like Giannis Petridis, you listen to the shows, you look at the play list with guys he's been playing 20-30 years ago. That music is fucking timeless. I'm so up to people like Petridis. Respect to you mate. I'm looking forward to hearing your next show on a radio station that is hip and cool enough to employ you.
You can listen to the clip of John Robb's comment here.
Yours' Sincerely,
Τέλος, μην ξεχνάτε το Facebook group - Don't Stop Giannis Petridis Show! στο οποίο έχει μαζευτεί αρκετός κόσμος και τα σχόλια δίνουν και παίρνουν...
